Management gurus often use "flexibility" as a buzz word to describe what Canadian firms, and individual workers, need to do to become more globally competitive. However, "flexibility" can also refer to workers being better able to control their work schedules, work location and work time. Giving employees the opportunity to make greater use of 'flexible' work arrangements, such as compressed workweeks, can help them to achieve better work-life balance. Reduced conflict between work and family have been linked to improved workplace morale, enhanced productivity and reduced absenteeism. Concerns about the effects of work schedules on individual and family well-being are increasingly raised as Canada becomes a 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week economy, with fewer Canadians working the traditional Monday to Friday daytime schedule. Do Canadians say they work too few, too many or just the right number of hours? What effect does improved flexibility in setting one's work schedule have on an employees job satisfaction, the health of the working environment and work-family balance?
